The most common question I get is, ‘I want to breastfeed. How can I set myself up for success?’ . My answer is always the same. ‘Start thinking about how you want to feed your baby BEFORE you give birth.
I’m a Certified Lactation Counsellor and I believe (controversial opinion incoming!) that too much emphasis is put on birth preparation to the detriment of the postpartum period. Think of it as The Wedding vs. The Marriage.
Your birth is one day (if you’re lucky!) but figuring out how to feed your baby postpartum takes weeks. If you get it right at the start you could be breastfeeding for months and even years if that’s what you and your baby want. You and your baby are a team. Together you learn a new skill. Through trial & error, blood (hopefully not!), sweat (very likely) and tears (definitely!) you figure it out. You can have a fulfilling, happy & cozy feeding relationship but it takes time and crucially, the right support to help you get there.
The Breastfeeding Myth - We’re told that breastfeeding is ‘natural’. That you’ll ‘just know how to do it instinctively’. Nonsense! We would never expect someone to get in a car and know how to drive without a single driving lesson would we?! So why is it any different for breastfeeding?
So many friends, strangers and clients have said, ‘I wish I’d know how HARD breastfeeding would be! I wish someone had told me! I wish I’d been better prepared. Had the info about all the options so I could make an informed decision. I hope this site and package will do just that. Take away the mystery, present everything in a concise, clear, objective way so you can make an informed decision about what works best for you and your family.
What I will be doing - Being your personal feeding cheerleader! Most of the time mums have great instincts about what’s working and what isn’t and I’m here to support you, listen to you and believe you. Whether offering practical or emotional support, being a sounding board or just remind you that you’re doing great, I’m here for it! I’ll encourage you to listen to your intuition and lean into what feels right. You are the expert in your baby. I’ll share my wealth of knowledge and experience in a concise, clear and objective way so you can make an informed decision about what works best for you and your family.
What I won’t be doing - Judging you based on the feeding decisions you make. Whatever they might be. Breast isn’t Best. Mental Health is best. Family is best. I take a holistic approach. If you’re killing yourself trying to breastfeed with little / no support and it’s taking a toll on your mental health, that’s not best. For anyone. Beyond the baby, your feeding journey needs to work for you, your partner & your support network.
If you think that sounds useful, schedule an intro call here, drop me an email or get in touch by phone. I can’t wait to help you have a happy, healthy feeding relationship with your baby.
